Les Miserables Mesa Theatre reviews
Les Miserables less that expected.
The story was powerful. A lot of attention was given to the backdrops in advertising, but they usually looked grey and murky with little or no detail visible to me. Disappointing.
My companion and I heard the words of the songs from the female performers quite nicely, but the voices of the men were either over-amplified or there was a general accoustical problem because their songs could not be understood. For this particular play, volume could have turned down and performances would have been enhanced. Understanding the story without being able to hear would be impossible for someone without a general knowledge of the tale before going in.
It's a dark play - I expected that. With the wonderful accoustics of the Fox Theater, there is no need to amplify volume til it reaches negative intelligibility. Sure wish there had been a few more songs sung by Cosette in the vein of "I Dreamed a Dream."
I must have missed something because to me it didn't live up to the press.
